Traveling in northern B.C. this summer, my husband and I were heartened to see First Nations and others sharing our environmental concerns. Based on these protest signs, it is clear that residents do not want the risk of big tankers full of petroleum products and liquefied natural gas potentially polluting one of the world’s richest and least spoiled marine environments. The only pro-industry sign we encountered was obviously erected by industry on their property.

The Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline from the tar sands of Alberta to Kitimat, B.C had been approved, but subject to lawsuits. Justin Trudeau, Canada’s new Prime Minister, has said NO, but Enbridge hasn’t given up. A controversial proposed LNG processing facility at the mouth of the salmon rich Skeena River is currently under review.
